How wrong replying of riddle made her dream shattered badly?

Once upon a time in the British era of 1820s a beautiful young daughter of newspaper hawker Alice reached outside the theatre to watch theatre show to see acting of her favorite stage actors, waiting in queue to buy a ticket. When she reached at the ticket counter, was told that all tickets being sold out. It really annoyed her but she was eager to get inside the theatre.

At her disappointment she was finding a ways, suddenly she saw man standing at corner had ticket in his hand was smoking a cigar so she approached him to talk. Alice knew she had to do something unusual that day to get ticket from him. Suddenly looking at her unnatural smile, John couldn't understand why she was showing off?

When conversation begun between the two, John agreed to give her ticket in one condition and that was she must give correct answer of riddle. But if she would lose, has to sit together to watch theatre with him, had bought one extra ticket that day. Alice knew that could never happened and would answer correctly.
